Easy Homemade Mulling Spice Mix

You can do this.  The only thing you really have to do is zest an orange and slowly bake the peels in the oven.  Everything else you buy in the spice aisle or order from Amazon. Fun part is taking a hammer (or wine bottle) to the spices to crush.  Best part is having your house smell of baked oranges and cinnamon.  Sold.

Easy Homemade Mulling Spice Mix

Makes enough spice to flavor 1 bottle of red wine or 1 quart apple cider

Total time: 1 hr 15 min

Things you'll need:

*½ teaspoon allspice berries

*½ teaspoon whole cloves

*1 cinnamon stick, crushed

1 teaspoon dried orange peel

*1 star anise

*found in spice aisle of grocery store

Steps:

  1. Preheat oven to 200 degrees.

  2. Using a veggie peeler, peel an orange.  Be careful not to use too much pressure. You only want the zest, not the white pith because it’s bitter. Don't beat yourself up though if you get a little.

  3. Spread orange peels onto a cookie sheet.  Try not to overlap peels. Bake in oven about 1 hour. This may vary depending on how much moisture was in your orange. You’ll know they are done when they feel dry to the touch and can be broken into smaller pieces.  Don’t let them go  too long or the peels will brown.

  4. Once cool, put in a ziploc bag and crush with a wine bottle, hammer, or rolling pin. Remove from bag and place in mixing bowl

  5. Place cinnamon stick in bag and repeat to crush. Make sure pieces are small enough to fit in your Christmas ornament holder.

  6. Add remaining ingredients to bowl and mix together to finish your mulling spice.

  7. Store any leftover in a sealed container

Note: 1 ½ tablespoons of Mulling spice will flavor 1(750 ml) bottle of red wine.
